HHE Apprenticeship Initiative
Hystandard Handling Equipment has started 2016 in a strong fashion, employing 5 new staff members to join their growing business. Among the new recruits are two new first year apprentices. This has become a common sight at Hystandard due to this being the second advent of the HHE Apprenticeship Initiative. The HHE Apprenticeship Initiative is a program that was spearheaded by Managing Director John Flinn.
Growth in 2016
John Flinn begun the HHE Apprenticeship Initiative in 2014, after realizing just how dire the need was for new technicians in the industry. Consequently in two short years Hystandard Handling Equipment has become the largest employer of apprentice forklift mechanics in New South Wales and Victoria. In a recent interview with Forkliftaction.com; Managing Director John Flinn spoke about how the team is the greatest asset of the business. Flinn explained that the vision for the team is to provide a world-class workplace, with industry-leading job security.
As a result of a desire to make all members of the team invested in its success, Flinn has two key culture commitments to Hystandard. Firstly, a percentage of profits are divided between members of the team each year. This is so everybody can reap the rewards of their combined hard efforts through the year. Most noteworthy, Hystandard had never laid off an employee in an economic downturn.
State of the Industry
When asked about his vision for the future of the business, Flinn explained that the HHE Apprenticeship Initiative was the only way the industry would grow. Unfortunately, there aren’t many companies who share this vision. Between NSW and Victoria in 2016, there are less than 20 forklift technicians enrolled in TAFE. As a result of this lack of investment, a sharp decline in skill-sets is becoming more and more noticeable in the industry. Without some significant changes soon, there could be a serious skills gap in the materials handling industry.
