On the afternoon of Tuesday 26th June, Hystandard Handling Equipment Hallam played host to 12 students as part of a Job Ready Program coordinated by Skilling Australia in conjunction with WPC Group, one of HHE’s apprentice group partners.
Steve Dunne, National Service Manager, gave participants a talk and guided tour of HHE’s Hallam offices and workshop. Students were attending as part of a 3 week Job Ready course which concluded with a 1 week work experience placement.
The audience consisted of 12 students, between the ages of 16 and 22, who all live locally, in Dandenong and its surrounding suburbs. Also present were 4 representatives of Skilling Australia and WPC Group. The students were interested in pursuing an apprenticeship or traineeship in a variety of industries including Automotive, Warehousing, Horticulture, Business and Hospitality.
Steve spoke with students about the history of HHE, what it does, how it works, types of employees. He also took participants on a tour of the Hallam facilities highlighting employee’s roles within the business and how they all work together. He also spoke about what he looks for in a potential employee as well as passing on some insider tips on what an employer’s expectations and how to promote yourself to a potential employer.
Following on from the tour, all students proudly graduated last week: 4 with work experience, 5 directly recommended to employer partners, 1 exploring self-employment and 1 exploring further study. As a direct result of Steve’s talk, one student is now exploring Parts Interpreting Apprenticeships…leaving his previous ideas and musical aspirations to outside of work hours.
